Survey Equipment

Engineering Surveying

Certitude Surveys helps contractors to deliver successful projects across a range of disciplines including:

  • Earthworks & Roads
  • Civil & Concrete
  • SMP (Structural, Mechanical & Piping)
  • Rail

Setting out

Certitude Surveys is highly experienced in setting out clear, comprehensive and concise survey marks to the required level of accuracy, to enable works to be carried out as per design. A variety of data sources can be used, including pdf drawings, coordinate tables, shapefiles, CAD data, road alignment data inc MX Genio, 3D digital terrain models (DTM) and BIM models, to turn design into reality.

Different projects require different approaches to setting out. Certitude Surveys can find an efficient solution to suit any positional and height tolerance, working proactively with trades, subcontractors and plant to help them do their job effectively.

Certitude Surveys also takes underground services seriously and views any service strike of a known service, as a failing of the surveyor on site. To this end we have developed various systems to help the contractor avoid service strikes

As-Built Surveys & Reports

Certitude Surveys is skilled in conducting surveys and creating reports demonstrating that the contractor has met their quality requirements and tolerances. We also produce a digital record of the built environment including new earthworks, structures, and underground services. This can be provided in any necessary format, for example:

  • Clear and concise pdf reports including multi-sheet series of drawings.
  • Design to as-built coordinate comparisons and verticality reports.
  • CAD data in dwg, dxf and shapefile formats among others, in correct layers with relevant metadata as per client requirements.
  • Maintain underground services database to avoid service strikes.
3D point clouds & As-built BIM Model – see BIM Services
  • Earthworks section views and profiles.

Machine Control

We are also highly proficient supporting the contractor’s machine control assets on site, for all the major brands (Trimble, Leica, Topcon). This includes:

  • provision and maintenance of GPS base station on site
  • positioning of repeaters as required to ensure sufficient radio coverage
  • adjusting the machines’ radio frequency & protocol to match broadcast and receive GPS corrections
  • installing bench points to check height and position
  • adding/ calibrating new excavator buckets
  • production of 3D machine control models and alignments with chainage

Volume Surveys & Calculation

Volumes form the basis of earthworks projects, in terms of planning for material movements, End of month (EOM) reporting and consequently payment for the contractor. Certitude Surveys is adept in the data acquisition, modelling, volume calculation and presentation of 3D models. Some of the services we can provide to the contractor are as follows:

  • Accurate post-strip or ground prep surface model to form the basis of subsequent earthworks calculations
  • Design volumes calculation, earthworks’ depth layout drawings (ie cut/fill heat map)
  • Periodic progress surveys & reports to track material movement and allow contractors to submit claims
  • Identification and quantification of unsuitable material and rock, carry out dig tests
  • Measure and track stockpile quantities

We carry out volume surveys using a variety of methods, including UAV photogrammetry (see surveying services page). The most appropriate method (or combination of methods) will be selected based on requirements such as accuracy, safety, site access and area size/configuration.

Monitoring

Monitoring surveys are set up to suit your project and will be tailored to give you a cost-effective and fit-for-purpose solution to each site. Selecting appropriate equipment for the monitoring surveys is crucial for providing an accurate set of results and detecting/tracking changes such as deformation and structural settlement. Sufficient control and monitoring points will then be established for the required duration, with due consideration given to avoiding disturbances from the environment local to your site.

Where monitoring programs are a contractual requirement during or after a construction project, we can provide advice in selecting the best methods, set up the system and conduct ongoing work. This includes automatic systems incorporating monitoring total stations and other sensors, feeding back data into a management system such as Leica GeoMOS for real-time alerts and AI-based environmental awareness.
